Oral Cancer Screening in Espanola
Checkups That Look Deeper
An oral cancer screening is a small part of your checkup — but it can make a big difference. During every exam at Espanola Dental Centre, we check your lips, tongue, cheeks, throat, and gums for anything unusual.
Most of the time, there’s nothing to worry about. But early detection helps us catch potential problems before they become serious. If we do notice anything out of the ordinary, we’ll talk through the next steps and refer you if needed.
What We Look For
During your screening, we check for:
Red or white patches
Lumps, bumps, or sores that aren’t healing
Changes in tissue texture or colour
Areas of pain, numbness, or swelling
We use visual and tactile checks — and when appropriate, screening tools — to make sure we’re being as thorough as possible.
Who Should Get Screened?
Everyone. Oral cancer screenings are a part of every adult exam, no matter your age or health history. Certain factors may increase risk, including smoking, heavy alcohol use, HPV, or a family history of cancer — but even without risk factors, screening is a simple and important preventive step.
What If Something Is Found?
If we see anything that needs closer attention, we’ll explain exactly what we’re seeing and why it matters. From there, we’ll help arrange a referral or follow-up with a specialist. We’re here to support you through every step — and to make sure nothing falls through the cracks.
